Prior to adopting robotics, Dr. Arrington had performed the most advanced laparoscopic surgeries in Utah. Through extra fellowship training he gained the skills necessary to perform the most complex surgeries with laparoscopy and robotics. He has completed over 100 robotic assisted surgeries.
Robotic Surgery is growing fast. A robotic system allows a surgeon to learn laparoscopic procedures quicker than traditional laparoscopy. The most difficult task for traditional laparoscopic surgery is placing stitches. Robotic systems make this much easier to perform.
Many skilled gynecologists are able to learn how to use the robotic system effectively to benefit patients. For most "routine" surgeries requiring abdominal surgery, many gynecologists have the skill to complete these with the robotic system.
As with most things in life, surgical skills are not the same between all surgeons. When patients have complex problems with the uterus, ovaries, or pelvic area, knowing the skill level of your surgeon is very important. Many times pelvic structures are distorted and standard "approaches" to the surgery are not possible.
A robotic system does not compensate for a lower laparoscopic skilled surgeon. For difficult surgery such as large, fibroid uterus, pelvic prolapse, severe endometriosis, adhesions, large ovarian cysts and endometriosis cysts, surgeons must have the knowledge, skills and comfort level to surgically manage these cases.
Choosing an experienced and appropriately trained surgeon can give you the best chance at completing the surgery without significant complications or needing to make a larger incision.
This is true for standard laparoscopy as well as robotic surgery. Surgeons performing advanced robotic surgery for complex disease must have a knowledge of dissecting techniques, appropriate methods to avoid complications, and appropriate skills to manage complications with the robot instead of converting to "open" surgery.
Again, it is important to "interview" your gynecologist to make sure they can handle anything they may encounter during the surgery, especially in complex cases.
